Cat Grooming
Cat grooming is necessary to prevent the build up of hairs in the cats stomach that causes fur balls. Most cats groom their own coats regularly. Self-grooming keeps the coat clean, massages the skin, removes loose hair and stimulates growth. Cats do swallow the hairs they lick off their coats which is why grooming is necessary. Brush your cat gently with a soft brush when it is eating or relaxed on your lap. When your cat can tolerate the soft brush happily you can use a comb that will remove more loose hairs. When you have finished grooming always give your cat a little treat. Shorthaired Cats Shorthaired cats in good health don't need grooming more than once a week. This removed dead hair, prevents fur balls and means that your cat is less likely to leave fine hairs all over your carpets and furniture. To groom a shorthaired cat comb from head to tail and then repeat with a brittle or rubber brush. Use a soft baby brush on the coats of Rex cats. Longhair Cats The soft fine hairs of many longhair cats easily become tangled and form impossible mats. They require daily grooming to keep them free from knots. Use a wide toothed comb or slicker brush to tease gently through the hair all over the body. Take care not to hurt the cat by tugging too hard, particularly in sensitive areas. Tangles are found most commonly around the ears and behind the legs. Tease them out with your fingers and then comb through. Use a brittle brush for the tail, brushing gently to either side.
