Cleaning Dog Ears

Cleaning dog ears is especially important to owners with large-eared dogs like weimaraners, cocker spaniels, and Bassett hounds. While a little ear wax is fine and helps protect the inner workings of his ears, excess ear wax and dirt can indicate or lead to infection and should be treated.

Wipe the outer portion of your dog’s ear with a cotton ball. Do not insert the cotton ball into his ear canal. Use warm water to get rid of any dirt. You can use a mild soap. Baby soap is a good option.

If there is a smell from the dogs ears it is best to consult a vet as there could be an infection. Bacterial infections are quite common as dog ears do seem to hold a lot of dirt, especially if you have a dog that likes to roll around outdoors.

You can purchase specialist dog ear cleaners. If your dog has problems with their ears or if you find they need cleaning often that a specialist cleaning fluid is the best option.
