Cleaning Grout

Cleaning Grout

Cleaning grout can be a hard job. As tiles by nature are placed in moist environments the atmosphere attracts dirt and mould growth to the grout and it can start to look dirty very quickly. Grouts are porous and, as a result, they easily absorb grease, dirt and lime scale.

The secret to great looking tiles is clean grout. Any bathroom or kitchen no matter how clean will look old and tired if the grout isn't sparkling.

Mild cleaning fluid and warm water won't budge these stains. You need something with a little more kick to get your grout clean.

If your grout has not been cleaned in a while I would start out with bleach and hot water. Make sure you wear rubber gloves for this. Mix 1 part bleech with 3 parts hot water and work the mix over the sufrace with a small abrasive brush. A tooth brush will do but will be time consuming so I would try and find a bigger brush. Leave the mix for ten minutes and rinse.

Over time Bleach can corrode grout so I don't recommend using this type of cleaner very often. To keep your grout sparkling once clean you should seal it with a grout sealer. Sealing forms an invisible barrier between the grout and the surface, this will then protect your investment for years to come.
