Getting Rid of A Musty Smell

A musty smell in your home is usually caused by damp conditions or poor ventilation in rooms. Musty odors can be quite easy to get rid of if you know how.

First off check the offending room or area for the source of the smell. Check for damp patches and check the ventilation to the room. If the area is damp or there is poor ventilation then this is more than likely the cause of the smell.

If the issue is poor ventilation then ventilating the area more effectively will often solve the problem. It may take a few weeks to remove the smell completely once ventilated properly.

If the issue is damp then to remove the musty smell you need to concentrate on dealing with the damp. There are many causes of damp and it could be something as simple as clogged guttering that is causeing the damp in your home. First off try and find the cause of the damp and solve the problem; clear the guttering, recork the window seal, get better ventilation into the room etc...

If you have a more inbuilt damp and mildew problem because of an old house then to solve the problem as best as possible and get rid of the smell I recommend getting a dehumidifier for the offending room or area.

A dehumidifier will suck water out of the air reducing the damp content and the ability of mildew to grow. I have a problem with damp in my second living room.
